Mary's Search for Jesus
Text: John 11: 30-31
MARY’S SEARCH FOR JESUS
Mary must have been informed that Jesus had not yet reached her home yet. She did not wait for Him to come. She would go and seek Him.
“Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met Him. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, ‘She is going to the tomb to weep there.’”
John 11:30-31
1. “Now Jesus had not yet come into the town”

b. Martha had met Jesus just outside the town.
c. Jesus was still there when Martha made a quick exit to call Mary.

b. “The Jews”
i. This was a term John used to describe the influential leaders of the Jewish hierarchy.
ii. These people had known Lazarus and his family.
c. “Comforting her”
i. It was normal for people to go to homes that had suffered bereavement.
ii. To attempt to give comfort was a normal thing to do.
3. “When they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her”
a. These comforters felt with the family.
b. They followed Mary.
c. Mary had not told them where she was going.
d. She had not told them that Jesus was coming.
4. “She is going to the tomb to weep there”
a. They assumed that Mary was going to the tomb of Lazarus.
b. She had loved her brother dearly and had grieved terribly when he died.
c. They were willing to follow Mary though the tomb was a distance away from the town of Bethany.
d. These were genuinely concerned for their friends Mary and Martha.
Perhaps their presence might give her some measure of comfort.
