Meeting Up with Jesus
Text: John 11: 32-33
MEETING UP WITH JESUS
Mary finally met Jesus. There was a following of mourners with her at that time.
“Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.’ Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her, weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.”
John 11:32-33
1. “Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him”
a. What Martha said was true.
b. Jesus was coming to see them.
c. She saw Jesus and responded humbly.
2. “She fell down at His feet, saying to Him”
a. She bowed before Jesus.
b. She had acknowledged that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Son of God
c. This was an appropriate response to the Master.
3. “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died”
a. These were the words that Martha had expressed.
b. She too had felt a sense of helpless despair.
c. Her understanding and faith in Jesus were similar to that of her sister Martha.
4. “Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping”
a. The scene was poignant and heart-wrenching.
b. Everyone was in tears.
c. There was such a feeling of defeat and despair in all their hearts.
d. They had not understood what it meant to have eternal life!
5. “He groaned in the spirit and was troubled”
a. This does not mean that Jesus also felt despair.
b. He was troubled and He groaned in the spirit because:
i. There was such unbelief.
ii. There was such poor understanding and application of faith in what He had taught.
iii. The doctrines of eternal life and the resurrection had not been fully comprehended!
