The Deep Sadness Jesus Felt
Text: John 11: 38-39
THE DEEP SADNESS JESUS FELT
Jesus did not reply to the opinions He heard all around Him. He was deeply saddened by the lack of faith that prevailed among the people He had ministered to!
“Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, ‘Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.’”
John 11:38-39

ii. This sadness caused Him to “groan in Himself”.
b. “Came to the tomb”
i. No one understood why He came to the tomb.
ii. All must have been perplexed why He was at the tomb.
iii. What could He do there? Who visits a tomb?
2. A description of the tomb
a. It was a cave.
b. A stone is usually rolled over the mouth of the cave.
i. To prevent grave robbery.
ii. To prevent the stench of a dead body from getting out.
3. “Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone’”
a. This was a startling command.
b. There was no mistaking the commanding tone of this statement.
4. “Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him”
a. Martha was alarmed.
b. She needed to address Jesus forthrightly again.
5. “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days”
a. Martha raised an objection. The stench of a dead body would prevail if the stone was removed!
b. She did not understand why Jesus would command the stone of the tomb to be removed!
