The Witness of the Multitidues
Text: John 12: 17-19
THE WITNESS OF THE MULTITUDES
Though there wasn’t full comprehension of the significance of the triumphal entry, the multitudes bore witness of Jesus fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah.
“Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, ‘You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him.’”
John 12:17-19
1. Two groups of people highlighted:
a. Those who were actually there when Jesus raised Lazarus from his tomb.
i. These were the actual “witnesses”.
ii. They saw with their own eyes Jesus raising Lazarus who had been in his tomb for four days.
b. Those who had heard that Jesus had indeed raised Lazarus from the dead.
i. They believed what they had heard.
ii. They saw Lazarus alive and well.
2. “For this reason the people also met Him”
a. They were part of the multitudes who thronged the streets of Jerusalem.
b. They had reason to believe that Jesus should receive the highest honour.
3. “He had done this sign”
a. A miracle was not just a mighty deed.
b. A miracle was a sign from God.
c. The raising of Lazarus was an outstanding sign to all who were witnesses.
4. The Pharisees
a. They had plotted day and night.
b. But all their efforts had been in vain.
c. In desperation they cried out:
i. They had accomplished nothing.
ii. They were watching with consternation that “the world has gone after Him.”
This was an intended exaggeration that expressed both fury and exasperation!
