Teaching the Disciples how to Face Death
Text: John 12:24
TEACHING THE DISCIPLES HOW TO FACE DEATH
Jesus was never afraid of death. He knew that His disciples were. Thus, He felt that He must teach them how they are to face death courageously.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”
John 12:24
1. “Most assuredly, I say to you”
a. Jesus had used this phrase a number of times (John 6:26; 10:1).
b. “Most assuredly”
i. This was an assured truth.
ii. One may be very confident and sure.
iii. This word is backed up by the authority and power of the Lord Jesus Christ.
iv. This truth will stand the test of time.
2. The imagery of wheat
a. This would be more easily understood by the Disciples.
b. They had seen many wheat fields.
c. Wheat was made into bread.
3. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone”
a. The grain of wheat will take time to grow till it is fully mature.
b. But if the wheat remains as a stalk, it abides alone; it is not able to produce other seeds.
c. The wheat must be prepared to die.
d. But when it dies, it will yield other seeds.
4. “But if it dies, it produces much grain”
a. Jesus was comparing life to a grain of wheat.
b. If one is afraid to die, then his life is only of solitary significance.
c. But if one is not afraid to lay down his life, his death can bring about many blessings.
5. Jesus was referring to His own life
a. He was not afraid to fall into the ground and die.
b. But He is assured that His death would not be in vain.
c. Great blessings would come as a result of His death.
