A Deeply Profound Act of Humility
Text: John 13: 4-5
A DEEPLY PROFOUND ACT OF HUMILITY
One of the most profound acts of love may be found here in this text. It was something that the Disciples of the Lord Jesus could never have imagined.
“Rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”
John 13:4-5
1. “Rose from supper”
a. To rise from supper would be a normal act.
b. The tables would be cleared by household servants, if they were employed.
2. “And laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself”
a. Thus, began the astonishing work Jesus would do.
b. It was normal to dress nicely and well for a dinner such as “The Passover Feast”.
c. “Laid aside His garments”
i. There would be the inner wear (for the home).
ii. There would be the outer wear (for going out in public).
d. “Took a towel and girded Himself”
i. Jesus was now dressed as a servant.
ii. The clothes of a menial servant would include a long towel wrapped around the waist.
3. “After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet”
a. This had never happened before.
b. Jesus was doing the work of a very low servant.
c. He began washing the feet of His own disciples!
The disciples should have washed the feet of their Teacher!
4. “And to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded”
a. Washing of the feet must conclude with the drying of the feet.
b. The servant’s towel was now used to wipe the feet of the disciples.
c. They were too stunned to react!
d. They could not fully understand this act of their Teacher.
There must have been a lot of mixed emotions felt deep within the hearts of the Disciples.
