Coming to the Disciple Peter
Text: John 13: 6-7
COMING TO THE DISCIPLE PETER
The leading Disciple was Peter. When Jesus came to him, Peter was taken aback! How could his Teacher wash the feet of His disciple!
“Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will know after this.’”
John 13:6-7
1. “Then He came to Simon Peter”
a. Jesus had already washed the feet of some of the Disciples.
b. It was now Peter’s turn.
2. “And Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, are You washing my feet?’”
a. Peter could not understand what Jesus was doing.
b. He had watched Jesus washing the feet of his fellow-disciples.
c. Nobody had said anything to the Lord Jesus when their feet were washed and dried.
d. He could not but burst out with this question.
i. Peter called him “Lord”.
ii. That was correct.
iii. Jesus was not just their Teacher.
iv. He was Lord of the storm.
v. He was Lord who caused demons to obey Him.
vi. He was Lord and had power over all diseases.
vii. He was Lord even over death.
e. How could One who was Lord wash the feet of His disciples?
3. “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this”
a. This was an answer that was difficult to comprehend.
b. Jesus knew that the Disciples did not understand this profound act of humility.
c. But through receiving this act of humility their understanding would be further deepened.
d. This teaching was deep and difficult for the Disciples to comprehend.
e. Jesus wanted His disciples to trust Him and this profound act of humility He was performing.
