Gentle Teaching
Text: John 13: 10-11
GENTLE TEACHING
Jesus continued to teach His Disciples gently and graciously. He sought to teach them a profound truth from this act of washing the feet of His disciples.
“Jesus said to him, ‘He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.’ For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, ‘You are not all clean.’”
John 13:10-11
1. “Jesus said to him”
a. Jesus did not reject Peter.
b. He continued to teach him.
2. “He who is bathed… is completely clean”
a. This was the answer to Peter when he asked for his hands and head to be washed.
b. The disciples had already been bathed.
c. They had been made clean.
d. They had been baptised as an expression of their faith in Jesus.
3. “Needs only to wash his feet”
a. The feet walk in the world.
b. And being in the world we pick up sin.
c. Sin is like the dust that clings to the feet.
d. Thus, the feet must be washed again and again.
4. “You are clean, but not all of you”
a. The Disciples were declared “clean”.
i. They were justified by faith.
ii. They had received salvation.
b. “But not all of you”
i. Judas followed Jesus too.
ii. But his heart was not clean for he had allowed Satan to fill his heart.
5. “For He knew who would betray Him”
Of course, Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him. Out of grace and mercy, He did not expose his treacherous heart.
