A Gentle Rebuke
Text: John 14: 9
A GENTLE REBUKE
Jesus had just taught a vital truth about God. At first, Thomas showed that he did not really understand Jesus and the Father. Now Philip seemed to struggle with Jesus’ explanation about His relationship with God.
“Jesus said to him ‘Have I been with you so long, And yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father.’’”
John 14:9
1. “Have I been with you so long?”
a. Three years with Jesus is indeed “a long time”
b. There should have been:
i. Deeper understanding
ii. A clearer faith
iii. A more insightful comprehension
2. “And yet you have not known Me, Philip?”
a. There was no one like the Lord Jesus
b. Everything about Him was:
i. Outstanding
ii. Profound
iii. Perfect
c. There wasn’t anyone like Him ever!
3. “He who has seen Me has seen the Father”
a. What was God the Father really like
b. Know and understand Jesus, and we would have “seen” the Father
4. The word “seen”
a. No one can actually see an invisible Spirit-Being like God
b. But there are other ways of explaining the word “seen”
c. This is a metaphorical use of the word to describe “comprehension of God”
5. “So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’”
a. God cannot be seen by the naked eye
b. But He can be seen, understood, and appreciated when we see Him through spiritual eyes
