Abiding In Jesus
Text: John 15: 5
ABIDING IN JESUS
This truth was deep and profound. Thus, Jesus had to devote time to explain this truth carefully.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5
1. “I am the vine, you are the branches”
a. This was a truth that was worth repeating.
b. The relationship between Jesus and His disciples must be firmly established.
2. “He who abides in Me, and I in him”
a. The concept of abiding must be drawn from Jesus’ example.
b. He had shown how He abided in the Father.
c. He had also shown how He had remained committed to His Disciples.
d. The Disciples must seek to practise what they had been taught.
3. “Bears much fruit”
a. The bearing of fruit is an important point to note.
b. The Disciple who is truly abiding in Jesus would bear fruit.
i. There would firstly be growth in his life.
ii. Then he would find success in his ministry.
iii. Fruitfulness in life and ministry indicates that the believer is abiding in the Lord.
4. Fruitlessness is not to be taken lightly
a. Fruitlessness is like an indicator.
b. It may indicate that the believer may not be abiding in the Lord.
5. “For without Me you can do nothing”
a. Many foolishly do not practise abiding in the Lord.
b. They abide in themselves instead:
i. They abide in their own thoughts.
ii. They abide in their experience.
iii. The abide in human or worldly wisdom.
iv. They find out painfully that they can do nothing significant without Christ at all.
Let us determine to practise abiding in the Lord Jesus Christ that we may bear much fruit.
