An Important Teaching About "The World"
Text: John 15: 18-19
AN IMPORTANT TEACHING ABOUT “THE WORLD”
The earth that God has created is a beautiful thing to see and admire. However, the world that we see around us is created by human beings. The world we see is full of injustice, oppression, hatred, and evil.
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not
of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore, the world hates you.”John 15:18-19
1. “If the world hates you”
a. The word “if” describes a reality.
i. Jesus forewarned His Disciples that the world would hate them.
ii. But we must never be afraid of the hatred of the world.
b. The word “hate” has the following nuances:
i. Great dislike
ii. Hostility and animosity
2. “You know that it hated Me before it hated you”
a. Hatred for Jesus first
i. This was evident.
ii. The hatred for Jesus caused His enemies to resort to every means to kill Him.
b. Hatred for the Disciples
i. Because they had followed Jesus.
ii. They extended their hatred to the Disciples.
3. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own”
a. If the Disciples were not true.
b. If they were of the world, then the world would love its own.
4. “Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you”
a. The fact was that Jesus had called them out of the world to follow Him.
b. Thus, they are not part of the world system.
c. Therefore, the world hates them.
d. The Disciples must brace themselves and not be afraid of the hatred of the world.
The true Disciples of Jesus must dare to be steadfast and faithful to the Lord amidst the hatred of the world.
