"Let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD"

Text: Hosea 6:3

THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

There were many things that caused Israel to stumble and to fall from grace. The root of the problem however had to be addressed forthrightly.

“Let us know,
Let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD.
His going forth is established as the morning;
He will come to us like the rain,
Like the latter and former rain to the earth.”
Hosea 6:3

1. “Let us know”

a) The meaning is: “Let us seek to know”.
b) Israel was a specially blessed nation by the Lord.
c) To know the Lord better should be the most natural response of the nation.

2. “Let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD”

a) This was an exhortation from the prophet Hosea.
b) A good and godly nation ought to pursue many things:
i) The progress of the nation
ii) The protection of the people in the kingdom
iii) The knowledge of the LORD their God

3. “The knowledge of the LORD”

a) Many thought that this was too difficult.
b) Idolatry seemed to be easier.
i) Idols could be seen.
ii) There was nothing much to learn or discover about the deities worshipped.

4. Hosea had to correct these wrong ideas of God.

5. It was not impossible to pursue the knowledge of God.

a) “His going forth is established as the morning”
God may be understood! His movements are as clear and distinct as the morning!
b) “He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth”
i) There were two sets of rainfall that Israel experienced (winter and spring rains).
ii) The Lord promised to give them these rains for the crops planted (Deuteronomy 11:13-15).
iii) God will honour His word and bless the people when they seek Him with all their heart.

Israel must show genuine sincerity in pursuing knowledge of the LORD their God.
