Deep Sorrow
Text: John 16: 5-6
DEEP SORROW
The Disciples struggled very much at these teachings of Jesus. They did not know how they could cope if Jesus was to suffer and die.
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.”
John 16:5-6
1. “But now I go away to Him who sent Me”
a. This was not the first time Jesus had spoken about returning to the Father in heaven.
b. To Jesus, returning to the Father in heaven was:
i. Good
ii. Glorious
iii. Signalling the fact that His life’s work was done; He had fulfilled God’s plan of salvation
2. “And none of you asks Me, ‘Where are you going?’”
a. There were some attempts to ask Jesus where He was going. John 14:1-6
b. But there were no further inquiries.
c. This was what Jesus meant when He said these words
i. The Disciples should have inquired further.
ii. They should have asked for more details.
3. “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart”
a. There was one major problem that hindered the Disciples from further inquiry.
b. Sorrow had filled the heart of the Disciples.
c. This kind of sorrow felt was unwise and unhealthy:
i. It prevented further inquiry.
ii. It virtually paralysed the Disciples so that they could not function effectively.
iii. It led to despair.
iv. Their confidence and hope in Christ were affected adversely.
4. How could they have overcome their feelings of sorrow?
a. Through a greater faith.
b. Through remembering who Jesus was and all that He had said and done.
