A Special Request

Text: John 17: 24

A SPECIAL REQUEST

Our hope in Heaven is often taken for granted. Jesus prayed that His Disciples may one day be with Him in glory land.

“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

John 17:24

1. “Father, I desire”

a. The closeness of relationship between Jesus and His Father is carefully maintained.
i. The word “Father” is used time and again.
ii. Nothing is taken for granted.
b. The word “desire”
i. It simply means “a wish” (Literally translated, “I wish”).
ii. Jesus simply presented His personal wish to His Father.

2. “That they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am”

a. Jesus is certainly speaking of a definite place.
b. This place would be none other than heaven itself.
c. His wish presented to God the Father:
i. His Disciples whom God had given.
ii. These Disciples may be with Jesus.
d. Though Jesus had not yet returned to Heaven.
Nevertheless, He spoke of it with clear and definite certainty.

3. “That they may behold My glory which You have given Me”

a. There is a glory that the Disciples had not yet seen.
b. This glory would be seen only in Heaven.
c. This was a glory that Jesus prayed that the Disciples would one day behold.

4. “For You loved Me before the foundation of the world”

a. Jesus was assured that His Father had loved Him before the foundation of the world.
b. On the basis of this love, Jesus brought His “desire” (“wish”) to His Father.
c. He did not take for granted the love of God at all.
d. The love of the Father came to mind even as He made this request known to God.
