Facing The Enemy Courageously
Text: John 18: 3- 4
FACING THE ENEMY COURAGEOUSLY
Jesus was calm and composed after His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. A contingent of enemies came to Gethsemane, led by Judas Iscariot.
“Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, ‘Whom are you seeking?’”John 18:3-4
1. “Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees”
a. Judas was paid to lead the contingent to Jesus.
b. “Detachment of troops”
i. These were temple security guards.
ii. They were not Roman soldiers.
c. “Officers from the chief priests and Pharisees”
i. These were higher ranking than the security guards.
ii. They took charge of the people who came to Gethsemane.
2. “Came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons”
a. Lanterns and torches
i. The Garden of Gethsemane was not lit up.
ii. The scene took place in the night.
iii. Light was needed to search for Jesus.
b. Weapons
i. The guards and officers came fully armed.
ii. Jesus would be surrounded by His Disciples.
iii. They expected resistance from the Disciples.
3. “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, ‘Whom are you seeking?’”
a. Jesus knew ahead of time what would transpire.
b. He did what seemed unthinkable.
c. He went to greet the very group of people who were sent to arrest Him.
d. He asked them pointedly, “Whom are you seeking?”
