The Arrest Of Jesus

Text: John 18: 12 -14

THE ARREST OF JESUS

The Gospel of Luke recorded the fact that Jesus gently and graciously healed Malchus. He touched his ear and healed him (Luke 22:50-51). Soon after, Jesus was arrested.

“Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.”

John 18:12-14

1. The composition of the detachment

a. Troops (guards)

b. Officers

c. A captain

2. “Arrested Jesus and bound Him”

a. The arrest was now made.

b. They did not arrest any of the Disciples.

c. They had fled the scene.

d. Jesus was all alone when He was bound.

3. “And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year”

a. Annas

He was the previous high priest.

b. Caiaphas

He was the son-in-law of Annas.

c. The position of the high priest could be secured through political means.

d. Jesus was brought to Annas because he continued to exercise much influence.

4. “Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people”

a. This was a comment by John concerning Caiaphas the current high priest.

b. He made a prophetic utterance which was recorded in John 11:50.

c. His word was not seen as prophetic when he first said those words.

i. “That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.”

ii. Jesus would indeed die but not just for the people of Israel, but for the world!

a. 亚那

他是前任大祭司

b. 该亚法

他是亚那的女婿

c. 大祭司的职位可通过政治渠道而保守

d. 耶稣被带到亚那面前，因为亚那继续在背后影响政权

4. “这该亚法就是从前向犹太人发议论说‘一个人替百姓死是有益的’那位。”

a. 这是约翰对现任大祭司该亚法做出的评论

b. 他的以上预言被记载在《约翰福音 11：50》里

c. 当他刚说那番话时，并不被视为是预言：

i. “一个人替百姓死是有益的”

ii. 耶稣确实会死，但不只是为以色列的百姓，而是为世人！
