The Prediction Of Peter's Denial
Text: John 18: 17 - 18
THE PREDICTION OF PETER’S DENIAL
Jesus had predicted that Peter would deny Him three times (John 13:36-38). Peter refused to accept this word of the Lord. He would soon realise that His Teacher knew him far better than he knew himself.
“Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, ‘You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.”
John 18:17-18
1. “Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, ‘You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you’”
a. The servant girl was the one to whom John spoke to.
b. She looked at the person John wanted to bring into the courtyard of Annas.
c. She then asked an awkward question.
i. She spoke of Jesus with some disdain.
ii. She called Jesus “this Man”.
iii. This was the way the chief priests and Pharisees spoke when they mentioned Jesus.
iv. The servant girl was certainly not very kind or friendly.
2. “He said, ‘I am not’”
a. Peter was caught.
b. He wanted to follow Jesus.
c. But if he identified himself with his Teacher, he might be arrested too.
d. He chose the “easier path” by denying that he was a disciple of Jesus.
e. This was the first denial.
3. “Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself”
a. The weather was cold.
b. It was late at night when the arrest was made in the Garden of Gethsemane.
c. The servants and officers made a fire of coals.
d. They were standing by the fire, trying to keep warm.
e. Peter felt the bitter cold too.
f. He stood by the coals of fire to try and warm himself.
