The Second Denial By Peter
Text: John 18: 25
THE SECOND DENIAL BY PETER
Peter was in the courtyard of Annas, the father-in law of Caiaphas, the high priest. It was cold and he sought to warm himself by the fire that was in the courtyard.
“Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, ‘You are not also one of His disciples, are you?’ He denied it and said, ‘I am not!’”
John 18:25
1. “Simon Peter stood and warmed himself”
a. Simon would have preferred to be alone and away from prying eyes.
b. But it was rather cold and he drew near the place where a fire had been set up.
c. He was called Simon here for a good reason.
i. Jesus had called him “Peter” to signify that one day he would become a rock.
ii. Peter means “a rock”.
iii. Simon was his original name.
iv. It means “He had heard” (similar to the word “Samuel”).
v. Simon does not suggest “rock-like qualities”.
2. The statement of the people around him
a. Some may have known that he was one of the disciples of Jesus.
b. They suggested strongly that he was one of the disciples.
c. It was phrased as a question so that Simon would have to offer an answer.
3. The Second Denial
a. Peter denied that he was a disciple of Jesus.
b. Why did he deny Jesus?
i. Out of weakness.
ii. Out of deep fear.
iii. Out of sinfulness of the heart.
iv. The hostile environment made Peter choose “the easy way out”.
v. Simon was deeply conflicted within his heart. He did not really want to say what he did!
FULFILMENT OF THE PREDICTION OF JESUS
Jesus had predicted that Simon Peter would deny Him (John 13:38). He knew the actual strength of His Disciples. He still loved them despite their failures and weaknesses
