Jesus Before Caiaphas
Text: John 18: 28; Luke 22: 66 - 71
JESUS BEFORE CAIAPHAS
The Gospel of John did not make much mention of the trial of Jesus before Caiaphas. Neither did Matthew or Mark write about this trial. The Gospel of Luke noted the following details.
1. The Sanhedrin Council gathered together (Luke 22:66)
a. The elders of the people
b. The chief priests
c. The scribes
d. Caiaphas headed the Sanhedrin Council
2. The first demand of the Council
“If you are the Christ, tell us”
Luke 22:66c
3. The answer of the Lord Jesus Christ
a. He knew that even if He tried to explain they would not believe.
b. They would never let Him go from their clutches.
c. They will one day see the Son of Man sit at the right hand of God.
4. The second demand of the Council
“Are You then the Son of God?”
Luke 22:70
a. This question was not raised because they wanted to know the truth.
b. They wanted an answer that they could use to convict Jesus of sin.
5. The answer of the Lord Jesus Christ
a. He affirmed this truth.
b. He could not deny this glorious truth.
6. The conclusion of this trial
a. They felt that they did not need any further testimony.
b. They heard what they wanted to hear.
c. To them, Jesus had convicted Himself
i. Of grave sin.ii. Of blasphemy.
iii. Because He called Himself the Christ.
iv. Because He called Himself the Son of God.
