The Case Brought By The Council Members
Text: John 18: 31b - 32
THE CASE BROUGHT BY THE COUNCIL MEMBERS
The Sanhedrin Council members had brought up a case to Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea, early in the morning. Usually, cases are brought to the attention of the governor a long time before it is addressed. In this instance, the Council Members pushed their case against Jesus without prior notice.
Pilate suggested that the case against Jesus should be decided by the Sanhedrin Council. The charges against Jesus were:
1. He did not deny that He was the Christ.
2. He had affirmed that He was the Son of God
These were issues that the Roman Law courts never handled. These religious problems could not be resolved by Roman law!
THE RESPONSE OF THE COUNCIL MEMBERS
They were upset that Pilate did not appear to be on their side. They insisted that Jesus was worthy of being given the death penalty.
“Therefore the Jews said to him, ‘It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,’ that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.”
John 18:31b-32
1. “Therefore the Jews said to him”
a. This was a reference to the Jews who were members of the Sanhedrin Council.
b. This group was hostile to Jesus and all His teachings.
2. “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death”
a. Rome retained the prerogative to mete out the death penalty.
b. Jewish laws may mete out other forms of punishment, but not the death penalty.
c. The Jews had already decided that Jesus must die.
d. The problem for the Jews was how to get Jesus convicted under Roman law.
e. All religious issues were left to the Jewish Council to resolve.
3. “The saying of Jesus”
a. Jesus had told the Disciples that He would suffer under the Gentiles (Matthew 20:17-19).
i. He would be delivered to them.
ii. He would be mocked.
iii. He would be scourged .
iv. He would be crucified.
b. This prophetic word of the Lord Jesus Christ: It was being fulfilled right there and then.
