The Son Of God
Text: John 19: 7
THE SON OF GOD
Pilate could not understand why the Jews were so incensed against Jesus. They finally told him why they wanted to destroy Jesus.
“The Jews answered him, ‘We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.’”
John 19:7
1. “The Jews answered him”
a. The real reason was disclosed here.
b. Pilate began to understand their sense of religious hatred.
2. “We have a law”
a. The Jews declared that they had religious laws to follow.
b. This was allowed for by Rome.
c. The different races that were governed by Rome were allowed to follow their religious laws.
3. “And according to our law He ought to die”
a. Jewish laws had at least two aspects:
i. The civil law (this was over-ridden by Rome’s law)
ii. The religious law (Rome allowed this to exist)
b. According to the Jewish law:
i. Some sins were penalised by fines.
ii. There were some sins that merited the death penalty.
4. “Because He made Himself the Son of God”
a. This to the Jews was blasphemy.
b. The penalty for blasphemy was the death penalty.
THE THEOLOGY BEHIND THE “SON OF GOD” TITLE
What lay behind the “Son of God” title? The following thoughts are important to bear in mind.
1. It is a special title.
2. It would mean that Jesus was the Messiah (The Anointed One).
3. It would mean that Jesus was Himself Deity.
REJECTION OF JESUS AS THE SON OF GOD
The Jews could not bring themselves to believe and accept that Jesus was the Son of God. They would have to admit and confess all their sinful wrong-doing! They would have to come humbly to Jesus and to repent from their sins and follow Him as His disciples. They could never do that!
