The Road To Calvary
Text: John 19: 17 - 18
THE ROAD TO CALVARY
Jesus did not merely walk to the place of His crucifixion. The Roman soldiers made Jesus carry His own cross.
“And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the centre.”
John 19:17-18
1. “And He, bearing His cross”
a. Jesus had taught His Disciples how they must bear their cross (Matthew 16:24).
b. Now He was bearing His cross literally.
i. It was a heavy thing to carry.
ii. Jesus had been beaten severely a short while ago by the Roman soldiers.
iii. He had been arrested the night before and had been interrogated.
c. He must have been sustained:
i. By God
ii. By grace
iii. By faith
iv. By love
2. “Went out to a place called the Place of the Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha”
a. The place of the crucifixion was ominous.
b. In outlook, the place looked like the shape of a skull.
c. Golgotha in Hebrew has the same meaning, “Skull”.
3. “Where they crucified Him, and two others with Him”
a. There were three people crucified that morning.
b. It was surely one of the bleakest Passovers ever.
4. “One on either side, and Jesus in the centre”
a. The person in the centre was supposed to be the worst of the three.
b. Jesus had come to the hour of His death as He had forewarned His Disciples.
c. All that He had forewarned had come to pass.
d. Jesus continued to exercise full and complete faith in the plan and will of God, His Father.
