A Garden Tomb
Text: John 19: 41- 42
A GARDEN TOMB
The tomb was likely the property of Joseph of Arimathea. It was a garden tomb that he had intended to use for himself one day. It was dedicated and given to the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.”
John 19:41-42
1. “Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden”
a. Jesus was crucified at Golgotha.
b. There was a garden in close proximity.
c. The tomb had a garden surrounding it.
2. Another prophecy fulfilled
a. Isaiah prophesied about the death of Jesus (Isaiah 53).
b. The burial of Jesus was noted:
“And they made His grave with the wicked – But with the rich at His death…”
Isaiah 53:9a
i. There was a play of words in this text.
ii. This was done deliberately.
iii. The words “grave” and “death” were used interchangeably.
iv. But the reversal of words must be made to understand the meaning.
v. He died with the wicked.
vi. He was buried with the rich (Joseph of Arimathea’s wealth).
3. “And in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid”
a. Normally, the first person to be buried there would be the owner.
b. This privilege was given to Jesus the Lord instead.
c. It was a tomb of a rich man, for it even had a garden attached.
4. “So there they laid Jesus”
a. This was the least Joseph of Arimathea could do for his Master and Lord.
b. Nicodemus was in full agreement that Jesus be given a dignified burial.
This had to be completed by day’s end. This was called the Preparation Day just before the Sabbath.
