Visit To The Tomb Of Jesus
Text: John 20: 1 - 2
VISIT TO THE TOMB OF JESUS
Mary Magdalene was devoted to her beloved Saviour and Lord. She grieved that her Master had died. She was drawn to visit the tomb of Jesus. Her heart of love for the Lord Jesus was deeply moving.
“Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.’”
John 20:1-2
1. “The first day of the week”
a. This would be Sunday.
b. Jewish calendar concludes each week with the Sabbath (Saturday).
2. “Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark”
a. This would be early Sunday morning.
b. Still dark… just before dawn.
3. “And saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb”
a. Every tomb has a huge stone that covered the entrance.
i. To prevent animals from entering the tomb.
ii. To deter grave robbers.
b. But the protective stone was not at the mouth of the tomb.
i. This caused great fear to arise.
ii. Who could have done this?
4. “Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved”
a. Simon Peter was accepted as the leader of the group of Apostles.
b. The disciple whom Jesus loved:
i. This was a reference to John the Apostle.
ii. This was the humble way in which he described himself in the gospel of John.
5. “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him”
a. Mary was not alone. She had gone to the tomb with a few other women (Luke 24:1).
b. Fear was expressed. They were afraid that the enemies had taken the body of Jesus away.
c. They were anxious to find the body of their beloved Master!
