A Broken-Hearted Disciple
Text: John 20: 11 - 12
A BROKEN-HEARTED DISCIPLE
Peter and John were lost in their own thoughts. They probably did not share their thoughts and feelings with Mary. They just left for their individual homes.
“But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”
John 20:11-12
1. “Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping”
a. She did not feel that it was her place to enter the tomb of Jesus.
b. She did not have Peter’s personality.
c. She was a lady and all she could do was to be outside the tomb.
d. Her heart was broken and she continued to weep.
2. “And as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb”
a. She kept weeping.
b. She was unlike the other men disciples, Peter and John.
c. Tears just flowed copiously from her eyes.
d. She looked into the tomb, perhaps hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved Rabbi.
3. “And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain”
a. She did not know that they were angels.
b. They were dressed in white symbolically:
i. To represent purity.
ii. To represent radiance.
c. They were sitting down at the slab where the body of Jesus was lain.
i. What were these two doing there?
ii. Who goes into a tomb to sit?
iii. Why were they sitting at the place where the body of Jesus was supposed to be?
d. There were no answers.
i. She could not figure it out.
ii. She did now know the Scriptures well either.
iii. She continued weeping even as she looked into the tomb.
