Fear Of The Jews
Text: John 20: 19 - 20
FEAR OF THE JEWS
The Disciples struggled with their fears after the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. They were afraid that they too might suffer similarly.
“Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.”
John 20:19-20
1. “Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week”
a. This is reference to Sunday.
In the early morning, Jesus had appeared to Mary Magdalene.
b. In the evening, He now appeared to His disciples.
2. “When the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews”
a. The disciples continued to gather together.
b. But now they shut the doors behind them.
c. They were afraid of the Jews:
i. The officials of the Sanhedrin Council.
ii. The people who had put Jesus to death.
3. “Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’”
a. Jesus had to come to His disciples as the Risen Saviour.
b. He understood their fears.
c. He had to help overcome them.
d. “Peace be with you”
i. This was typical Jewish greeting.
ii. This was a blessing that would help them fend off fear.
4. “When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side”
a. He had to show them that He had indeed risen from the dead.
b. He was the One who had been cruelly crucified.
5. “Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord”
Joy had finally reached them. Joy was the most natural response at seeing their beloved risen Master.
