"I will be your King"

Text: Hosea 13:10

THE CONCEPT OF A MONARCHY

Israel was enamoured of the concept of having a king. In the days of Samuel the prophet, the people demanded that Samuel gave them a king, so that Israel could be like other nations (1 Samuel 8).

“I will be your King;
Where is any other,
That he may save you in all your cities?
And your judges to whom you said,
‘Give me a king and princes?'”
Hosea 13:10

1. “I will be your King”

a) The effective word is “ruler”.
b) The word “king” is a title.
c) God offered Himself to be the King of Israel.

2. “Where is any other, that he may save you in all your cities”

a) Israel longed for a king who would be able to save the nation.
b) Israel had 19 kings altogether.
c) But none was able to truly save the nation from powerful enemies.

3. “And your judges”

a) The LORD gave many judges to Israel (Book of Judges).
b) They were supposed to lead and to rule Israel wisely.
c) But they were weak and badly flawed.
d) The last judge of Israel was Samuel.

4. “To whom you said, ‘Give me a king and princes'”

a) Israel thought that if it had a king their problems would be better resolved.
b) If the king had princes, then there would be continuity.
c) These expressed “wishful thinking”.

GOD’S WORD TO SAMUEL

God knew what Israel was saying. He saw into their heart.

“And the LORD said to Samuel,
‘Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you;
for they have not rejected you,
but they have rejected Me,
that I should not reign over them.'”
1 Samuel 8:7

The rejection of the LORD God was one of the worst mistakes that Israel ever made. The nation would experience many problems that came after their desired kings sat on the throne of Israel.
