The Exceeding Greatness of His Power

PRAYING FOR UNDERSTANDING

Paul saw the need to pray for the Ephesians as he explained the spiritual blessings in Christ to them. These were deep concepts and he specially prayed for understanding for them with regards to three aspects

1. The hope of His calling (Ephesians 1:18).

2. The riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints (Ephesians 1:18).

3. The exceeding greatness of His power (Ephesians 1:19).

He ended off his prayer with wanting the Ephesians to discover the greatness of the Lord’s power. God’s power is something that we can comprehend and apply in our life.

DISCOVERING THE EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF GOD’S POWER IN OUR LIFE

1. POTENTIAL OF POWER

“And what is the exceeding greatness of His power”
Ephesians 1:19

The word “exceeding” in Greek means something that is surpassing. It is expressed in a way that is far beyond what we can imagine. The word “power” in Greek has the idea of dynamic power. There is this dynamic power from the Lord to do many things and to achieve much. God’s power is indeed exceedingly great and nothing can be compared to it. It can be seen in how He created the vast universe (Genesis 1). It is also something that we can discover and apply to our life personally. It can enable us to do great things for the Lord.

2. PATTERN BY WHICH THIS POWER WORKS

“According to the working of His mighty power”
Ephesians 1:19

How does this power work? When we exercise faith in the Lord, His power will work in a certain way. The word “working” in Greek means “to energise”. The basis of how God’s power works is to energise a person through the might of His strength. The word “mighty” in Greek is a reference to the creative, awesome power of God. The Lord’s power can truly sustain us and make us strong.

THE WAY TO DISCOVER THE EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF GOD’S POWER

1. THROUGH ENLIGHTENMENT AND KNOWLEDGE

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know”
Ephesians 1:18

Knowledge and power are closely related. It is through praying for enlightenment and having spiritual understanding and knowledge that we can discover the Lord’s power. Enlightened knowledge would bring about surging power to one’s life. Young people, let’s pray for this enlightenment and knowledge of His word.

2. THROUGH EXERCISING OF FAITH

“Toward us who believe”
Ephesians 1:19

It is also through continuously believing in the Lord that we can experience this power. This power can be personal to us when faith is applied to our life on a daily basis. The one who believes and continues to believe will see His dynamic working in us for his life and ministry. Our challenge is to keep on believing in the Lord. Let’s exercise faith that His power will work within us and through us.
