Jesus On The Seashore
Text: John 21: 4 - 5
JESUS ON THE SEASHORE
It was not an uncommon thing to see people at the seashore observing fishermen at work. Jesus was at the seashore of the Sea of Tiberias watching His Disciples.
“But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Children, have you any food?’ They answered, ‘No.’”
John 21:4-5
1. “But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore”
a. He did not walk on the sea to them as He once did (Mark 6:45-52).
b. He chose to stand by the seashore watching His disciples hard at work.
2. “Yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus”
a. They were too engrossed in their work.
b. They did not expect to see Jesus.
c. The Lord has veiled their eyes.
3. “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Children, have you any food?’”
a. The word “children”:
i. This was a term of affection.
ii. It was a regular term that a Teacher would use to address his pupils.
b. “Have you any food?”
i. It was another way of asking if they had caught any fish.
ii. It was a polite conversation.
4. “They answered Him, ‘No’”
a. This was an honest answer.
b. There must have been a tinge of sad disappointment in their answer.
THE PLAN TO RETURN TO FISHING
The plan did not work out as the disciples had planned and hoped.
1. They had been successful in the past.
2. They felt that they could just return to their old trade and carry on with their lives.
But they had not factored in the Lord’s plan for the future. They had forgotten their training with Jesus!
