Old Character Traits
Text: John 21: 20 - 21
OLD CHARACTER TRAITS
Peter still had much to learn. There were old character traits that still needed correction.
“Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, ‘Lord, who is the one who betrays You?’ Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this man?’”
John 21:20-21
1. “Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following”
a. Somehow, Peter was a little distracted.
b. He saw John… “the disciple whom Jesus loved”.
c. John was the one:
i. Who leaned on the breast of Jesus at the Last Supper.
ii. He was the one who asked Jesus who would betray Him.
2. “Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this man’”
a. What made Peter ask this question?
i. This was a question that was not asked nicely.
ii. John was simply referred to as “this man”.
b. Several things may be suggested:
i. There might have been some jealousy felt.
ii. Peter was forewarned concerning his future…. and how he would die.
This was not very pleasant news and may have made him a little upset.
iii. He might have wanted to know if John would suffer a similar fate.
SOME CHARACTER TRAITS OF PETER
Peter’s character traits had both strengths and weaknesses:
1. Weaknesses
a. He was quite impulsive.
b. He was still quite easily upset.
2. Work to be done
a. He still needs to learn how to love the Lord more fully.
b. He still needs to learn how to follow the Lord more completely rather than to get easily distracted.
