The Response Of The Lord Jesus
Text: John 21: 22 - 23
THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS
The Lord Jesus knew Peter well. He wanted answers. But they were not given to him. His need was to learn how to follow the Lord more completely!
“Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.’ Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, What is that to you?’”
John 21:22-23
1. “Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you’”
a. Jesus’ reply was cryptic.
b. He did not wish to answer Peter’s question directly.
c. The Lord had different plans for all His disciples.
d. They did not need to know the details of these plans.
e. A pertinent question: “What is that to you?”
i. The Lord’s plan for John may be different.
ii. What if John were to live and Peter were to die?
2. ‘Follow Me’
a. This was a command that was repeated.
b. The challenge was to follow the Lord and His leading:
i. It would take faith.
ii. It would take focus.
iii. It would take faithfulness.
3. “Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die”
a. This was a clear misunderstanding.
The words of the Lord Jesus were misread.
b. The brethren still had to be taught further and corrected.
4. “Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you’”
The words of Jesus must be more carefully understood. The challenge to all was to follow the Lord closely!
