HAVING ACCESS TO THE FATHER
It is important that we do not take for granted what the Lord Jesus has done for us. God has given wonderful spiritual blessings in and through Him. One of them is that we have a special access to the Father.
“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father”
Ephesians 2:18
1. WHERE ONCE THERE WAS NO ACCESS TO THE FATHER
A. THE GENTILES HAD NO ACCESS TO THE FATHER
There was a point of time where the Gentiles did not have access to the Father. They were strangers from the covenant of promise (Ephesians 2:12). They were without God and far off from Him. They had no access to Him at all.
B. THE JEWS HAD LIMITED UNDERSTANDING CONCERNING ACCESS TO THE FATHER
The access was given only to the High Priest. The High Priest could only enter the Holy of Holies once a year on the day of atonement. The common Jew had limited understanding concerning this access to God.
2. NOW BOTH JEW AND GENTILE HAVE A WONDERFUL ACCESS TO THE FATHER
A. THROUGH THE LORD JESUS
The word “access” in Greek is the word “prosagógé”. It has the idea of having access through the One leading the way. The Lord Jesus is the One who has gone ahead and paved for us the way to God.
I. THE LORD JESUS WAS THE ONE WHO TASTED DEATH FOR EVERYONE (HEBREWS 2:9)
II. HE IS THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION (HEBREWS 2:10)
The Lord is the one who is the pioneering leader for our salvation. He is the one who has gone ahead to bring about salvation for us.
III. HE IS A MERCIFUL AND FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST IN THINGS PERTAINING TO GOD (HEBREWS 2:17)
It is through the Lord Jesus as the great and merciful High Priest that both Jew and Gentile can have access to the Father. They can come boldly through the Lord Jesus to the Lord God and bring their prayers to Him. He is the mediator between God and man.
B. BY MEANS OF ONE SPIRIT
It is by means of the Spirit that both Jew and Gentiles can have access to the Father in prayer.
I. IT IS THROUGH THE SANCTIFICATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (1 PETER 1:2)
II. IT IS THROUGH THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION THAT WE CAN CRY OUT TO GOD “ABBA FATHER” (ROMANS 8:15)
He spiritually connects all of us to the Father. He brings us together as one to seek the Lord God.
LOOKING FORWARD TO AN EXCITING YEAR OF RELATING TO THE FATHER
As we begin 2020, let’s not take for granted what the Lord Jesus has done for us. He has given us access to God through His death and His high priestly ministry. Let’s learn to pray so much more to our Father through the Spirit in the new year. May the Spirit of God teach us to pray and call Him “Abba Father”! Have a blessed new year!
