Day 28

"I will shake My hand against them"

Text: Zechariah 2:9

THE CONQUESTS BY THE NATIONS

Israel was conquered and destroyed by the Assyrians (722 BC). Judah was defeated by the Babylonians (586 BC) and went into captivity for seventy years. This was a time of great humiliation and suffering for the LORD’S people. There were many needed lessons that had to be learned the hard way!

THE DELIVERANCE OF ISRAEL

Israel may have been ignominiously defeated and exiled. But the Lord refused to make a complete end of His people (Jeremiah 5:18). He would cause them to return to their homeland.

THE ANGER OF THE LORD AGAINST THE NATIONS

The Lord was against the nations that inflicted great affliction against Israel.

“For surely I will shake My hand against them,
and they shall become spoil for their servants.
Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me.”
Zechariah 2:9

1. “For surely I will shake My hand against them”

a) The shaking of the hand against someone:
i) To express defiance.
ii) To express anger and to express determination to retaliate.
b) If it is a mere human expression, it would come to nothing.
c) But this was a word from the Lord. This would be fulfilled.

2. “And they shall become spoil for their servants”

a) The conquerors made their captives “slaves” or “servants”.
b) On that day the conquerors would be defeated, and they would become spoil for their servants.

3. “Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me”

a) When this happens, it would become a confirming sign.
b) The Servant of the LORD would prove that He had been sent by God.
