Text: Genesis 19: 23-26
MEDITATION
Genesis 19:23-26
23 The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar.
24 Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.
25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The trip out of Sodom and Gomorrah
a. It was a one-day long trip at least.
b. The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered the little town of Zoar.
c. The two cities may be called “twin cities”.
d. Even when Sodom is mentioned on its own, Gomorrah was included.
2. The judgment on the cities
a. Cries against the cities had reached heaven.
b. The Lord had promised Abraham that He would spare the cities if ten righteous
people could be found there.
c. The visit of the two angels confirmed that the judgment against Sodom and Gomorrah would be meted out.
d. Fire and brimstone were rained upon the cities and destroyed them.
4. The fate of Lot’s wife
a. Her heart was in Sodom and she looked back at the city.
b. The angels had specifically warned Lot and his family against doing this.
Note: Mount Sodom in the Judean Desert region
There is a little region called “Mount Sodom”. A pillar of sorts is found there, near the Dead Sea. This pillar is commonly regarded as the pillar that enshrouded Lot’s wife.
