Text: 1 Peter 1
Title: “The sufferings and the glories that would follow” 1 Peter 1:11

INTRODUCTION

1. The Salvation which has been given to us is not to be taken for granted

a) Unfortunately, it often is

b) Good to review our understanding of salvation

2. The blessings of Salvation are many
(1 Peter)

a) A living hope (1 Peter 1:3)

b) An inheritance incorruptible (1 Peter 1:4)

c) A precious faith (1 Peter 1:7)

d) Inexpressible joy (1 Peter 1:8)

3. But this Salvation came at a great Price!

a) It is good to seek to appreciate afresh the salvation we have been given

b) May there be a drawing closer to the Lord our Saviour!

A. THE PROPHECIES CONCERNING THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. This salvation offered by Christ Jesus was revealed to the prophets (1 Peter 1:10)

a) These were people called to become special servants of God

b) They were given:

i) Instruction

ii) Insight

iii) Inspiration

iv) In different ways (Dreams, Direct communication)

v) Some messages from God had references to the distant future

vi) Some others were Messianic prophecies

2. The prophets went on to proclaim what they knew (1 Peter 1:10)

a) Their knowledge came through the searching of the Scriptures

b) Also, through special revelation given by the LORD

3. Some of the things the prophets taught:

a) The sufferings of Christ

b) The glories that would follow (1 Peter 1:11)

B. JESUS FEATURED AS “THE CHRIST”

1. The word “Christ” is actually a Title

2. It means “The Messiah”

3. Matthew noted this:
“Jesus who is called Christ” (Matthew 1:16)

4. Common usage (usus loquendi)
“Jesus Christ” (Meaning, “Jesus the Christ”)

C. THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST

1. The word “sufferings”

a) A Descriptive word

b) A Significant theological word

2. Why is the word in the plural form?
To signify a number of aspects:

a) Physical suffering

i) This was felt personally by Jesus

ii) His suffering was well-described in Isaiah 53

b) Vicarious suffering

i) As the Messiah

ii) He suffered on our behalf (He took the suffering that should be ours)

iii) He had to suffer the full penalty of the sins of mankind

D. HOW WELL DO WE APPRECIATE THE SUFFERING THAT JESUS HAD TO ENDURE?

1. Degree of suffering

a) Extensive

b) Intensive

2. Endurance of such deep suffering

a) Full and complete Trust in God

b) Humble obedience

c) Love for Mankind

E. THE GLORIES THAT WOULD FOLLOW

1. Glory that was given to Christ Jesus

a) Well-deserved glory

b) The fullness of the glory of God is bestowed upon Him

c) The full extent of this glory would be revealed only when Jesus returns (1 Peter 1:7)

2. An expression of God’s Glory that affects our lives presently

a) Joy

i) Real and palpable

ii) Yet, inexpressible

b) Full of glory (1 Peter 1:8)

i) A touch of heaven

ii) Beyond the usual joys of life

c) The salvation of our souls (1 Peter 1:9)

i) This is a precious gift

ii) The soul is of greater value than all the possessions of the world

CONCLUSION

1. Appreciation

a) Of Jesus our Saviour

b) Of His suffering to give things we do not deserve

i) Salvation

ii) Blessings

2. Appropriate Response

a) A deeper understanding of God

b) A stronger faith

c) A deeper sense of commitment to be true to the Lord
