Facing an intensifying problem

As we face the increasing spread of the COVID-19 virus, we recognise that many extremely vital decisions have to be made. These decisions are crucial as they are a matter of life and death. Unwise decisions can lead to death as we have seen all over the world. Wise and incisive decisions can prevent the spread of the virus and therefore save lives. Daniel was faced with a life and death situation when the king of Babylon had a troubling dream. (Dan 2:1) The king asked his wise men to both reveal and interpret his dream, but none of them could. So, he asked for them to be killed, including Daniel and his three friends. (Dan 2:13)

Wise and understanding

God blessed Daniel and his three friends with knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom. (Dan 1:17) They were proven to be ten times wiser than all the wise men of Babylon. (Dan 1:20) When Daniel came to know about the king’s decree, he wisely went to see him. He asked the king for more time. After which, he went to meet his three friends and told them about the decree of the king and how their lives were in danger. They responded by doing something most wise. They turned to God.

Seeking the mercies of God

“that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.” (Dan 2:18)

Daniel and his friends knew that this problem could not be resolved by just relying on their personal wisdom. They needed further wisdom from the Lord. They sought the mercies of the Lord. Only by the mercies of God that His deeper wisdom would be given. The Lord answered their prayer and the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. (Dan 2:19) It was indeed an expression of the mercies of God.

A deeper level of wisdom

In response to the revelation, Daniel blessed the Lord. (Dan 2:20–23) Daniel acknowledged that wisdom and might are from God. He demonstrated His wisdom in creation and in the replacement of kings. Daniel recognised that it is God who gives more wisdom and knowledge to the wise and understanding. He also reveals deep secrets, differentiating between what is darkness and light. God gave wisdom and might to Daniel that he might know what the king’s dream was. Daniel gave thanks and praise to God. He could reveal to the king his vision and the interpretation of it. God gave a deeper level of wisdom to Daniel.

Praying for God’s mercies and wisdom

While we do not have the gift of receiving such special revelation of wisdom and secrets today, we recognise in these challenging times, how greatly we need a deeper level of wisdom. Let us plead for the mercies of God to be given to us. It is only by the Lord’s mercies that wisdom and might are given. Why the combination of wisdom and might? Not only do we need to have deeper wisdom to deal with the situation but also the might to carry out that wisdom.

As a country, let us pray for God’s mercies and for deeper wisdom to be given to our leaders as they continue to make vital decisions each day to battle against the virus. As a church, let us pray for the Lord’s mercies and for further wisdom to be given to Pastor Charles and the Session as we continue to make wise choices in our ministry to our brethren. As individuals, let us pray for the Lord’s mercies and His deeper wisdom to be given to us to make good and sound choices in all things during this challenging time. Let us seek to go beyond our personal wisdom but seek the deeper wisdom of God.
