"Behold, your King is coming to you"

Text: Zechariah 9:9

THE MESSIANIC KING

How would the LORD fulfil all that He has promised? The answer lies in the prophecy of a Messianic King.

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Zechariah 9:9

1. Addressing the people affectionately

a) Affection is shown in the terms used.

b) A special word was employed – “daughter”.

c) Two expressions are to be noted (same meaning)

i) Daughter of Zion

ii) Daughter of Jerusalem

2. A message of great joy

a) “Rejoice greatly”

There is every reason to do this

b) “Shout”

This is another way of calling the people to “rejoice greatly”.

3. A special reason given

a) The Messiah King will come and establish His kingdom.

b) This must give to the heart every reason to rejoice greatly.

4. Special features to note especially

a) The King would be just and He will bring about salvation.

b) He will be a very different kind of king for He will be very humble (“lowly”).

c) He will not ride on a magnificent war horse but on a colt, the foal of a donkey!

d) This was fulfilled when the Lord Jesus rode into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11).
