Text: Genesis 26: 19-21
MEDITATION
Genesis 26:19-21
19 Also Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.
20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.
21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Quarrelsome people
a. The people of Gerar were probably Philistines.
b. They found fault with Isaac and created quarrels.
c. The dispute was one of ownership of the wells.
d. Water was not easily found and thus it was of great value to the owner of the well.
2. Two earlier wells
a. The well Esek
The word “Esek” means “strife”. There was strife between the herdsmen of Gerar
and the herdsmen of Isaac.
b. The well Sitnah
The word “Sitnah” means “hostility”. The people of Gerar were now openly hostile.
3. Challenges that had to be faced
a. Living as foreigners in the land of hostile neighbours.
b. A strong sense of enmity from the political leaders.
c. Actual quarrels that were potentially explosive.
d. Conflict could break out at any time.
4. Things needed to cope with problems in life.
a. Isaac would have to hold fast to his faith in the Lord and His promises.
b. He would have to find the wisdom to decide on the course of action to be taken.
c. He would need fortitude of heart and courage to face trials positively.
