Text: Genesis 29: 1-3

MEDITATION

Genesis 29:1-3

1 So Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the East.
2 And he looked, and saw a well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks. A large stone was on the well’s mouth.
3 Now all the flocks would be gathered there; and they would roll the stone from the well’s mouth, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the well’s mouth.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. The journey to the land of the people of the East

a. People used the sun to describe the land.
b. This land would be Northern Mesopotamia.
c. Many nomadic tribes inhabited this area.
d. The distance was about 724 km away from Beersheba.
e. Jacob may have felt safe from Esau’s wrath.
f. His vision of the Ladder to Heaven stood him in good stead (Jacob’s Ladder).

2. What Jacob observed

a. There was a well in a large field.
b. There were three separate flocks of sheep.

3. Local custom

a. This was a public well. It was open to people living around the region.
b. The well was well-protected by a stone when not in use.
c. The sheep-herders would bring their flocks to the well to obtain water.
d. A strong sense of public responsibility was in place.
i. The stone covering the well would be removed when water was needed.
ii. The stone would seal the mouth of the well when the watering was done.
iii. Water was not easily found and therefore wells were cared for diligently.

《创世记 29:1-3》
1 雅各起行,到了东方人之地,
2 看见田间有一口井,有三群羊卧在井旁,因为人饮羊群都是用那井里的水。井口上的石头是大的。

3 常有羊群在那里聚集,牧人把石头转离井口饮羊,随后又把石头放在井口的原处。

在生活里有意义地应用

1. 往东方人之地而行

a. 人们以太阳形容地方
b. 这地方是北美索不达米亚
c. 这地居住着许多游牧民族
d. 这地方距离别是巴有724公里
e. 雅各也许觉得这里远离以扫的愤怒
f. 他梦中见到直立到天的梯子也让他平安(雅各的阶梯)

2. 雅各所观察到的

a. 田间有一口井
b. 那里有三群羊

3. 当地习俗

a. 这是一口公用的井;居住在这区的人都能用
b. 井口上有石头封住,保护水源
c. 牧羊人会将羊群带到这井取水
d. 人们有公德心
i. 井上的石头在有需要取水的时候才将石头转离井口
ii. 取足了水再将井口关上
iii. 水不轻易得来,所以井都受到人们的保护
