Text: Genesis 29: 4-6
MEDITATION
Genesis 29:4-6
4 And Jacob said to them, “My brethren, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Haran.”
5 Then he said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know him.”
6 So he said to them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well. And look, his daughter Rachel is coming with the sheep.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s attempt to socialize
a. He addressed the strangers politely.
b. He addressed them as “brethren”.
i. To show friendliness.
ii. To show genuine warmth.
c. He needed to know exactly where he was.
d. Thus, he asked the shepherds where they came from.
2. Haran
a. This was a city that his mother must have spoken of.
b. This was his mother’s home town.
3. Further inquiry
a. He asked if the shepherds knew “Laban the son of Nahor”.
b. Technically, Nahor was the grandfather of Laban.
4. A friendly response
a. The shepherds replied that they knew him.
b. In fact, as they were speaking, the daughter of Laban had just arrived.
c. Rachel was a shepherdess, looking after her father’s flock.
It must have dawned on Jacob the LORD’s promise that He would be with him!
