Learning To Rejoice In The Lord Always

NOT LOSING OUR JOY AS WE TRUST AND WAIT ON THE LORD

Our primary source of joy should always be located in the Lord. This was what the Psalmist had as he began his psalm (Psalm 33:1-3). There was this special sense of joy found in the Lord as he sought to live in righteousness. He made a call to the righteous to praise God and to sing to Him joyfully. It was the word of God and His counsel that brought this sense of joy and spirit of praise  (Psalm 33:4,11). However, along the way, there were things that threatened to rob him of his joy. He wrote of how there was a problem of a possible death situation (Psalm 33:19). There was also a time of famine in the land. These things could have taken away his sense of joy in the Lord. But he fought it. He still sought to rejoice in the Lord as he trusted in the Lord and waited on Him.

Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  For our hearts shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.”  Psalm 33:20-21

This was the Psalmist’s testimony. He was able to trust in the Lord’s holy name. He learnt to wait on Him with greater depth. He involved his soul in waiting on Him and to trust in all that God’s name represents. Because of this, he was still able to rejoice in the Lord. What did he exercise faith in?

1. Faith in the omniscience of the Lord to look out for us

The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men… He fashions their hearts individually…”  Psalm 33:13,15

Behold the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy…”  Psalm 33:16

The Psalmist dwelt on the omniscience of the Lord concerning all men. He sees all men and works and fashions each one personally. It brings joy to the heart to know that the Lord works personally in each heart.  In addition, God looks out for those who fear Him and hope in His mercy. He would be there for them in times of trouble.

2. Faith in the omnipotence of the Lord in helping and protecting  us

He is our help and our shield…”  Psalm 33:20

The Psalmist also trusted and waited on the Lord knowing that He is all-powerful and that He would be his help when he needed Him. He was his shield in protecting him. The Lord is also our help and shield.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

It is easy to have joy in the good times of life but to continue to have joy in bad times is not easy.  Even as we continue in this “Circuit Breaker” and to face the challenges of life, let’s not lose our joy in the Lord.  Let’s focus on the Lord and His word. Let’s rejoice in Him always as we seek to trust and wait on Him. He looks upon us and looks out for us 24/7. Let’s put our full trust in Him.
