Text: Genesis 29: 15-17

MEDITATION

Genesis 29:15-17

15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?”
16 Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17 Leah’s eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Laban’s word to Jacob

a. He acknowledged that Jacob had not taken his hospitality for granted.
b. Obviously, Jacob had done creditable work for Laban.
c. Jacob had served Laban as a relative (nephew).
d. But he had not been paid a wage at all.
e. He had served “for nothing”.

2. The offer of wages

a. Laban felt that Jacob should be paid for his work.
b. He asked Jacob to determine his wages.
c. Jacob was a relative, thus his opinion was sought.
d. If he had only been a worker, he would not be asked this question.

3. A brief background of Laban’s family

a. Laban had a number of children.
b. He had sons, though not mentioned in this context (Genesis 31:1).
c. He had two daughters.
d. They were relevant to this context
i. The elder of the two daughters was called Leah.
She probably did not have great eyes. They were called “delicate”.
ii. The younger daughter was called Rachel.
She was described as “beautiful of form and appearance”.
