"You were not redeemed with corruptible things"

Text: 1 Peter 1:18

CONSCIOUSNESS OF OUR REDEMPTION

Every believer should be conscious of his redemption from sin. His life must reflect this effectively.

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things,
like silver or gold,
from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers.”
1 Peter 1:18

1. “Knowing”

a) The word “knowing” in the English text may suggest “the present tense”.
b) The correct understanding must have the following nuances
(This is called a Perfect Active Participle):
i) Having known clearly and thoroughly.
ii) And now being in a state of having a definite knowledge.
iii) The believer can speak of “knowing” and “appreciating deeply”.

2. Peter’s description of how we have obtained our redemption

a) Peter had already said that we have been sprinkled clean by the blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:2).
b) He also mentioned that we have been begotten again to a living hope by the resurrection of Christ (1 Peter 1:3).
c) Christ Jesus had to suffer much for us in order to give us salvation (1 Peter 1:11).

3. He states this again, by making a statement of contrast

a) “You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold”
i) Our redemption was not paid for by silver and gold.
ii) The price paid by the precious blood of Christ cannot be measured in monetary terms.
b) There must be this conscious “knowing” (knowledge).
c) This sense of consciousness of the worth of our redemption must be kept fresh and alive.

4. “From your aimless conduct received by tradition from your father”

a) The conduct that Peter enjoined (1 Peter 1:15, 17)
i) There must be holiness.
ii) One must live in the fear of the Lord.
b) The “aimless conduct” received (taught) by tradition:
i) The conduct taught by “tradition from your fathers” was essentially aimless.
ii) The focus was just life on this earth.
iii) Much of it had to do with “silver and gold”.
c) A huge contrast was painted.
i) Believers must live as people redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus.
ii) They must live for the Lord as pilgrims and sojourners.
iii) They must never live as if this world is all there is to life.
