Text: Genesis 37: 1-4

MEDITATION

Genesis 37:1-4

1 Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2 This is the history of Jacob.
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colours.
4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Dwelling in the land of Canaan

a. He dwelt “as a stranger” in the land as Isaac had lived.

b. They were nomadic and moved from place to place in search for pastureland.

2. Jacob and Joseph

a. There was a special bond of love between father and son.

b. Joseph was more loved than all his brothers.

c. Special favour shown:

i. He was obviously favoured.

ii. His brothers noted this and hated Joseph.

d. The regular tunic (cloak)

i. Most tunics were rather plain.

ii. They were often of one colour, they were like work-tunics.

e. “A tunic of many colours”
Joseph was the only one who was ever given such a cloak! It must have been a costly tunic. The brothers became even more jealous. They became increasingly hostile.

f. Joseph working with his brothers, brought a bad report concerning the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, to Jacob. This certainly did not improve their relationship.

1. 住在迦南地

a. 同以撒一样，他以“寄居的”住在这地

b. 他们是游牧民族，四处迁徒以寻找牧场

2. 雅各和约瑟

a. 父子之间有一种特殊的爱

b. 父亲爱约瑟胜过于爱他的众子

c. 父亲显示特别的恩惠

i. 约瑟显然很受宠

ii. 约瑟的哥哥们见父亲爱约瑟胜过于爱他们，就恨约瑟

d. 外衣

i. 大多数的外衣设计简单

ii. 它们通常只有一种颜色，就像工作外衣一样

e. “一件彩衣”

约瑟是唯一获得这彩衣的人！这肯定是一件很昂贵的外衣。哥哥们见了变得更加嫉妒，越发恨约瑟。

f. 约瑟与他的哥哥们一起工作。他向父亲报告有关妾辟拉和悉帕儿子们的恶行。这显然对他与哥哥们已恶化的感情没有帮助。
