Text: Genesis 37: 21-24
MEDITATION
Genesis 37:21-24
21 But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.”
22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.
23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colours that was on him.
24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Reuben’s plan
a. He had to persuade his brothers not to kill Joseph.
b. His suggestion was to put his brother into a pit in the wilderness.
i. It could have been a disused pit dug by hunters to capture animals.
ii. It could be an old dried-up well.
c. Reuben hoped to rescue Joseph if he had the opportunity.
d. The killing of a brother was not something he wanted to be a part of.
2. Joseph imprisoned
a. His special coat of many colours was taken from him.
i. He had worn it as he searched for his brother.
ii. The coat symbolized his special status as the favourite son of Jacob.
iii. His coat of many colours was the cause of great envy among his brothers.
b. He was thrown into a pit
i. He did not know what would happen next.
ii. His father was far away.
iii. His brothers hated him.
iv. He had every reason to fear for his life.

《创世记 37:21-24》
21鲁本听见了,要救他脱离他们的手,说:“我们不可害他的性命。”
22又说:“不可流他的血,可以把他丢在这野地的坑里,不可下手害他。”鲁本的意思是要救他脱离他们的手,把他归还他的父亲。
23约瑟到了他哥哥们那里,他们就剥了他的外衣,就是他穿的那件彩衣,24把他丢在坑里。那坑是空的,里头没有水。
