"He who would love life and see good days"

Text: 1 Peter 3:10

FAMILIARITY WITH THE PSALMS

The Apostle Peter not only knew the prophetic books, but he was also familiar with the Psalms. 1 Peter 3:10-12 is essentially a quotation from Psalm 34:12-16. Peter cited Biblical reference as his source of authority and admonition.

“For
‘He who would love life
And see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.'”
1 Peter 3:10

1. The context of Psalm 34

a) King David was teaching his subjects about the practice of the fear of the LORD.
b) The practice of the fear of God would lead to blessings in life.
c) This text was applied by the Apostle Peter in his epistle.

2. “He who would love life and see good days”

a) “Love life”
i) Normally no one wants to die prematurely.
ii) One wants to live as one is able.
b) “See good days”
i) No one wants to see bad days.
ii) It is normal to have a good life (“see good days”).

3. “Let him refrain his tongue from evil”

a) The tongue should never be used to speak evil things.
b) Every effort must be made to restrain the bad or wrong use of the tongue.

4. “And his lips from speaking deceit”

a) Another bad use of the tongue is to speak deceitful words.
b) The “tongue” and “the lips” refer to the same thing (Psalm 15:2-3).

The tongue must never be abused if we are to see the Lord blessing our life!
