"All things that pertain to life and godliness"

Text: 2 Peter 1:3

GOD’S PROVISION

When we think of God’s provision, we almost automatically speak of material blessings that He has given. Peter opened up a new dimension of thought when he wrote about God’s spiritual provision.

“As His divine power has given to us
all things that pertain to life and godliness,
through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.”
2 Peter 1:3

1. “As His divine power”

a) God, being who He is, obviously possesses power.

b) This is correctly called, “divine power”.

2. “Has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness”

a) God has given:

i) This is a wondrous thought.

ii) This text does not say “God will give”.

iii) It says plainly, “God has already given”.

b) What has God given?

i) In a word, “All things”.

ii) He has made full preparation and then gave that provision.

c) “All things that pertain to life”

i) God has given to us eternal life.

ii) This life was also meant to be an abundant one (John 10:10).

d) “And godliness”

i) One characteristic of our new life in Christ is “godliness”.

ii) It arises from the righteousness imputed to us.

iii) God’s power has been given to help us live in godliness.

3. “Through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue”

a) Once again, we come across the word “knowledge”.

i) It was mentioned in 2 Peter 1:2.

ii) It was mentioned again in 2 Peter 1:3.

b) The power of God would be found “through” knowledge.

i) Knowledge of God who called us.

ii) He called us to “glory”.

iii) He also called us to “virtue” (moral excellence).

The challenge to deepen and increase in knowledge is both obvious and compelling.
