Text: Genesis 47: 5-6
MEDITATION
Genesis 47:5-6
5 Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6 The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The Pharaoh did not speak to the brothers of Joseph further
a. They obviously were different from Joseph.
b. They had also mentioned that they were despised shepherds.
2. The Pharaoh’s word to Joseph
a. The Pharaoh addressed Joseph instead.
b. He acknowledged and welcomed Joseph’s family to Egypt.
3. The generosity of the Pharaoh
a. They could dwell in Goshen.
b. They could in fact choose to dwell in any part of Egypt they wished.
c. The whole land of Egypt was before them.
4. An invitation for competent herdsmen
a. The Pharaoh ignored the word “shepherd”.
i. He made no reference to the remarks of the brothers of Joseph.
ii. They showed little wisdom or regard to what Joseph had spoken to them.
iii. That the Pharaoh would even make this offer showed how well he regarded Joseph. Perhaps some of the siblings would turn out well too.
b. But he offered positions to the brothers of Joseph.
i. If they were competent herdsmen, they could work for the Pharaoh if they wished.
ii. They could in fact become “chief herdsmen” if they were skilled.
