Text: Genesis 50: 1-3
MEDITATION
Genesis 50:1-3
1 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him, and kissed him.
2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Deep grief felt by Joseph
a. He felt the deepest sense of love for his father.
i. He fell on his father’s face.
ii. He wept over him.
iii. He kissed his father.
b. Nothing was said about the responses of the other sons.
i. It is likely they felt sadness too.
ii. But the relationship between them was not as strong or as affectionate.
iii. The last words of their father did not help to make their relationship to grow stronger.
2. Joseph in command
a. Joseph gave orders to the Egyptian physicians.
b. They were under his orders; they were called his “servants”.
c. The order was to embalm Jacob.
3. The process of embalming
a. This would take forty days.
b. Great skill and care were needed.
4. Official mourning days
a. They were declared as seventy days of mourning.
b. This would apply because Joseph was next to the Pharaoh in power.
