"To everything there is a season"

Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1

A SHORT STUDY ABOUT “TIME”

Solomon went on to study a difficult subject: “Time!” His approach was to make observations rather than to offer a philosophical perspective.

“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

1. “To everything there is a season”

a) The first observation about “time” was the fact that there were “seasons”.

b) One may speak of the “seasons of life”.

c) In fact, everything has “a season”.

2. “A time for every purpose under heaven”

a) Solomon added the word “purpose” to “time”.

b) “Time” and “purpose” were not separate ideas.

3. The challenge is to understand “Time”

a) With reference to “Season”.

b) With reference to “Purpose”.

4. Applying this concept with reference to “Life”

a) “A time to be born”

i) Life begins at birth.

ii) There must be purpose behind the birth of a baby.

b) “A time to die”

i) Death is inescapable.

ii) The reality of death must cause us to wonder what our purpose on earth is.

5. “A time to plant”

a) This too is the beginning of life

b) One must exercise wisdom:

i) What to plant.

ii) When to plant.

iii) Where to plant.

6. “And a time to pluck what is planted”

a) This would be the death of the plant.

b) But the plant has fulfilled its purpose on earth.

i) It has grown well.

ii) It has served its purpose of feeding mankind.

7. Our challenge

a) To understand the seasons of our life.

b) To comprehend the purpose of our life on earth.

c) To fulfil that purpose before we come to the end of our life.
